Louisiana Department of Transportation Crews performed electrical work on two new generators for the Cameron Ferry M/V II last week. The generators – located on the east and west banks of the Calcasieu Ship Channel – will shorten the ferry’s downtime during outages caused by storms, hurricanes, or maintenance to the electricity supplier. The generators must be inspected and tested by the manufacturer before they can be put into use.
At its peak so far this year, more than 15,700 vehicles used the ferry to cross in both directions during the month of June. The ferry is a critical piece of transportation infrastructure for Southwest Louisiana, including industry workers and the local fishing and shrimping industries.
