John Lynn Conner, known to many simply as Lynn, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Sept. 20, 2026, at the age of 79. A resident of Lake Charles and formerly of Creole, Lynn was born on Apr. 12, 1947, to Joseph Lee and Dorothy Logue Conner.
Lynn lived a life defined by hard work, loyalty, friendship, and an extraordinary resilience. He attended South Cameron High School before earning a football scholarship to McNeese State University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Education. His years at McNeese reflected both his athletic talent and his commitment to learning, and he proudly carried the spirit of a Cowboy throughout his life.
In addition to his strong work ethic, Lynn was a man of immense physical and emotional fortitude. Over the years, he faced multiple, courageous battles with cancer, confronting each diagnosis with the same grit, determination, and quiet strength that he once brought to the football field. Though the treatments took a toll, Lynn refused to let the illness define his life or dampen his spirit. He beat the disease more than once, returning time and again to the people, passions, and routines he loved so dearly.
An avid gardener, Lynn found great joy in working outdoors and cultivating both flowers and vegetables. His garden was not only a place of purpose and connection, but a sanctuary of healing during his periods of recovery. He took immense pride in sharing the fruits of his labor with family, friends, and neighbors.
Lynn spent many years working in the oil and gas industry, beginning as a roustabout and steadily advancing through dedication and perseverance. In 2021, he retired from Louisiana Pigment after more than twenty years of faithful service as a Safety Advisor. His career reflected the dependable and hardworking man he was, even as he quietly navigated health challenges behind the scenes. Those who worked alongside him knew him as someone they could always count on to lead with integrity and pride.
Sports were one of Lynn’s greatest passions, especially football. He was a devoted fan of the New Orleans Saints, the McNeese Cowboys, and the LSU Tigers, following each team with unwavering loyalty and enthusiasm. Whether watching a game, discussing a season, or reliving memories of years past, Lynn found joy in the excitement and camaraderie that sports brought into his life.
Those who knew Lynn will remember that he never met a stranger. He had a gift for making others feel welcome, valued, and appreciated. His remarkable ability to remember names, combined with his genuine interest in people, allowed him to form lasting friendships wherever he went. His warm smile, easy manner, and kind heart left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Above all, Lynn will be remembered as a man of strength, kindness, and steadfast devotion to his family. His life was rich with meaningful relationships, laughter, and treasured memories. Together with his beloved late wife, Cathy, Lynn spent many cherished years bringing people together around the table and sharing their love of Louisiana cooking. Their hospitality, laughter, and gracious nature will be deeply missed.
Lynn leaves to cherish his memory his loving daughter, Debra Wilder; his five adoring grandchildren, Morgan Picard and her husband Jeremy, Sydney Wilder, Taylor Wilder, and his two Texas grandsons, Hayden and Christian Conner; his beloved great-grandson, Jackson David Picard; his siblings, Gerald Conner and his wife Avita, Ronnie Conner, and Mary Anne Johnson and her husband Ron; along with a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by the love of his life, Catherine Morgan Conner; his beloved children, Angela Kay Johnson and Derek Hayden Conner; his parents, Joseph Lee and Dorothy Logue Conner; and his brother, Terry Lee Conner.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, Sept. 24, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. in the chapel of Lakeside Funeral Home. A rosary will be prayed at 1:30 p.m., followed by funeral services at 3 p.m. A private burial will be held at a later date under the direction of Lakeside Funeral Home, 340 E Prien Lake Rd, Lake Charles.
