Our local beaches were cleaned up this Saturday under a new name, Love our Waterways which is part of the Keep Louisiana Beautiful initiative.

Rutherford Beach had 52 volunteers pick up 194 bags of trash, while Broussard Beach had 14 volunteers that picked up 83 bags of trash, along with other non-bagable items.

Trash Games consisted of a Scavenger Hunt, Most Unusual, Foreign Item, Red, White, and Blue Item Set. Winners were given gift cards to Lighthouse Bend Restaurant. Winners were: Anna Greathouse, Evan Smart, Evan Smart, Anna Greathouse. Gift cards to Walmart were also random door prizes. All volunteers received a monogrammed beach towel, koozie, grabber and a cooling towel. Lunch was prepared by Canik’s Grocery.

Volunteers came from as far as Baton Rouge, which included 4-H Jr. Leaders, Starbucks, Venture Global, Red, White & Bayou Republican Women’s Group, Cameron 4-H, Coalition to Restore Louisiana, Bell City High School, Cameron Parish Tourist Commission, South Cameron Fire District, Cameron Parish Sheriff’s Office, McNeese State University, South Cameron High, Grand Lake High and the Miss Cameron Parish Organization along with many local residents that care about keeping our shore lines clean.
