Effie Wright

Effie Madeline Marks Wright, 77, of Hackberry, passed away peacefully at her sister’s home on Thursday, Nov. 10, 2022. Effie was born on Jan. 18, 1945 in Port Royal Kingston, Jamaica.

Effie was a longtime active member of Hackberry United Methodist Church. Effie and her husband, Charles, owned and operated Wrights Service Station in Hackberry for many years. After closing the service station Effie went to work at Brown’s for 27 happy years in her beloved community of Hackberry. She loved watching the Dallas Cowboys, reading, doing crossword puzzles in pen, and cooking especially baking her famous rum cake for everyone.

Effie was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Carmen Marks; brother, Christopher Marks; and two sisters, Sonia France and Paula Bogle.

Those left behind to cherish her memory are her husband, Charles Wayne Wright; brother, Arthur Marks, Jr of Jamaica; sister, Gillian Tremayne and her husband, Keith of Tasmania, Australia; sister, Joanie Wong and her husband, Dermot of Sulphur; brother, Stephen Marks and his wife, Charmaine of New York; sister, Heather Oakley of Sulphur; sister, Karen Jardine and her husband, Trevor of New York; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

Visitation will begin at 12 noon until time of service at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 20, in the Hackberry Community Center under the direction of Hixson-Sulphur Memorial Funeral Home. Effie’s wishes were to be cremated and her ashes will be laid to rest in Jamaica at a later date.
