Contract awarded to forge stairwell for Lighthouse

By Andrew Tingler

At the last Sabine Lighthouse – Cameron Preservation Alliance meeting, the contract of forging the stairwell was awarded to Robinson Iron of Alabama. While we had shipped out a few step pieces in the past to get estimates, this was about retrieving a full step. Our stairs collapsed during Hurricane Ike shattering every step that has been used since around the Hurricane of 1886.

After the 1886 storm, the bottom was filled and the floor and door lifted roughly three feet. Ike revealed the fill was just sand and rubble. The original steps were left intact below the new floor which somewhat preserved them until now for us to use one and make a mold. Several more steps are left and will remain in place.
