MINUTES
The Cameron Parish Beachfront Development District #1 Commission met in regular session on Monday, March 13, 2023, at the Johnson Bayou Recreation Center. The meeting was called to order at 6:00 p.m. by Vice Chairman Russell Badon, who led the pledge and prayer.
Commissioners present were Vice Chairman Russell Badon, Tammy Erbelding, Michele Long, Nikki Norman, and Secretary Cindy Snead. Guest present was Sonny McGee.
A moment of silence was held in memory of the victims of the drowning accident on Long Beach.
On the motion of Michele Long, seconded by Nikki Norman, and carried, the minutes for the February 12, 2022, meeting were approved as presented.
Old Business:
On the motion of Nikki Norman, seconded by Tammy Erbelding, and carried, Michele Long was elected 2023 Chairman.
On the motion of Michele Long, seconded by Nikki Norman, and carried, Russell Badon was elected the 2023 Vice-Chairman.
Cody Norman reported on the Holly Beach sub-committee. After the leasing of state land is completed, the sub-committee’s first project will be a portable life guard stand. The sub-committee will also ask the parish to supply a tractor and driver to pull the beach sweeper before the Nothin’ But Sand-Youth Day Cleanup on April 22, 2023.
Craig Broussard and Michele Long met with the Katie Armentor, the Cameron Parish Administrator and Louisiana State Land Office to discuss steps in completing the lease of land in Zone 2. The parish engineer will provide documentation of legal description and survey to move the process along.
Michele Long reported on the progress on the Adopt a Road program. Cheniere has committed to the program, and Williams has requested more information.
Michele Long updated the board on the “Nothin’ But Sand-Youth Day cleanup set for Earth Day, April 22, 2023. The Johnson Bayou Recreation Center will provide lunch for all volunteers as well as fun activities such as bouncy houses and games. Door prizes and volunteer thank you gifts will be presented at lunch. Cheniere, Energy Transfer, and Williams are donating funds and supplies for the event.
Russell Badon reported that the Johnson Bayou Recreation Center donated rip-rap material has been moved to Long Beach. Next, rip-rap material from a private land owner will also be transported to Long Beach. A work order will be sent to the parish to get the project moving along.
New Business:
Michele Long reported on the status of the rip current signs. On the motion of Tammy Erbelding, seconded by Nikki Norman, and carried, the board will order more rip current warning signs and flags. Sonny McGee will ask the police jury if they will cover the cost.
On the motion of Tammy Erbelding, seconded by Nikki Norman, and carried, the rip current signs and flags will be ordered.
Police Juror Sonny McGee and Michele Long reported on Senator Abraham’s bill to restrict driving on the beach west of Mae’s. After discussion with Senator Abraham and Representative Ryan Bourriaque, the decision was made not to proceed with the bill. The focus, instead, will be on enforcing laws that are already in place, such as driving on the dunes, speeding, and trespassing on private property. Surveillance cameras, drones, and signage will be utilized to monitor the beach. On the motion of Nikki Norman, seconded by Tammy Erbelding, and carried, the board will hold a special meeting to create a plan of action to present to the police jury at a later date.
On the motion of Tammy Erbelding, seconded by Nikki Norman, and carried, the board approves the purchase of board member business cards.
Craig Broussard updated the board as to February’s financial spreadsheet and its expenditures, donations, and account information.
On the motion of, Tammy Erbelding, seconded by Russell Badon, and carried, the selection of a new commissioner will be tabled until the April 10, 2023 meeting.
Open Session:
Cody Norman informed the board of the need for the removal of the abandoned boat on the beach. A reminder will be sent to the parish to have the boat removed.
The next meeting will be April 10, 2023, at the Johnson Bayou Recreation Center.
There being no further business, on the motion of Nikki Norman, seconded by Russel Badon, and carried, the meeting was adjourned at 7:27 p.m.
