Vernon McCain

Vernon Wayne McCain, 80, of Hecker passed away on Dec. 25, 2022 in a local hospital.

Mr. McCain was born July 10, 1942 in Lake Charles and lived all of his life in the Lake Charles area. He was a 1960 graduate of Grand Lake High School, received his Bachelor of Education from McNeese State University and his Master’s degree in Agriculture from USL. He worked as a teacher for forty-four years, teaching Agriculture for most of those in Cameron, Jeff Davis and Calcasieu Parishes. Mr. McCain also served as the FFA advisor and Rodeo Sponsor throughout the years and touched many lives. After his retirement, he worked for three years as the farm manager for the Calcasieu Parish Correctional Center. He was an active member of East Ridge Baptist Church, where he enjoyed leading the Men’s Prayer Group. Mr. McCain was a long-standing board member for the Cal-Cam Fair. He truly devoted his life to his Lord, his family, and his students.

Mr. McCain is survived by his wife of sixty-one years, Jolene Sandifer McCain of Hecker; sons, Lex McCain (Jana) of Springhill, Curt McCain (Becky) of Sulphur, and Wade McCain (Marlene) of College Station, Texas; daughters, Candace Stutzman (Thomas) of Huntsville, Ala. and Kerri Schwerdtfeger (Kyle) of Stratford, Okla.; son-in-law, Kevin Augustine of Sulphur; sister, Betty Sheridan of Lake Charles; fourteen grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Mima Hebert McCain; sister, Georgia “Berniece” Greathouse; brother, Curtis McCain; daughter, Maureen Kay Augustine; and infant son, Carl George McCain.

His funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 30, at Johnson Funeral Home. Reverend Alan Weishempel will officiate. Burial will follow in Highland Memory Gardens. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. and continue on Friday from 8:30 a.m. until the start of the service.

The family would like to express a special word of thanks to the attending physicians and staff at Christus St. Patrick Hospital, for the excellent care and compassion given.
