Sheriff makes murder arrest

On Monday, Aug. 2, the Cameron Parish Sheriff’s Office arrested Caleb Jacob Weldon, 23, of Grand Lake, on a charge of second degree murder. The charge stems from a drug overdose that occurred earlier in the year. Through investigation it was determined that the suspect was involved in a drug transaction with the victim prior to the overdose. The victim’s name is not being released at this time.

According to Louisiana law, Revised Statute 30.1, one definition of Second Degree Murder is the killing of a human being when the offender unlawfully distributes Schedule I through V controlled dangerous substances “which is the direct cause of the death of the recipient who ingested or consumed the controlled dangerous substance.” It is the same when the offender distributes the drugs to another person who then distributes to the victim, causing their death.

Sheriff Ron Johnson says he wants the public to know that all drug related activity is investigated, and all offenders will be arrested and charged to the fullest extent of the law.
