SCFD fights large brush fire

By Logan Manuel, Asst. Chief South Cameron Fire Dept.

On Saturday, Aug. 19, at approximately 8:30 a.m., the South Cameron Fire Department was advised of a large brush fire located on the south side of Trosclair Rd/Hwy. 82. At approximately 11:40 a.m. the same day, SCFD also responded to a reported brush fire on the north side of Trosclair Rd/Hwy. 82.

Crews extinguished the parts of the fire that could be reached. Firefighters worked the south fire until approximately 2:40 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 20. Crews responded to several calls in between those of Saturday and Sunday morning. Sunday morning at around 8:30 a.m., the fire that was on the north side of Trosclair Rd. reached Leonce Nunez Ln. and Abra Ln. off of West Creole Hwy.

Upon arrival of SCFD, the fire extremely intensified with the wind and drought conditions playing a major factor. Our crews worked this fire and small rekindles along Trosclair Rd. until about 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 22.

As you’re aware the situation is currently extremely dangerous. Any future fires that are intentionally lit will be throughly investigated. In a matter of minutes a small fire can and will turn into a very large fire if not contained immediately.

SCFD also would like to thank the community for their outpouring of assistance provided and also commend our firefighters for their dedication to our community and department.
