During the Cameron Parish Beachfront Development District #1 regular meeting on Monday, Aug. 12, Doe Woolery, a Cameron Parish deputy and the school resource officer at Johnson Bayou High School, provided an update on the Sandy Paws TNR (Trap-Neuter-Release) project that took place over the weekend. The initiative, aimed at managing the local feral cat population, was a collaborative effort involving several dedicated community members and organizations.
Veterinarian Joe Stark, affiliated with Bayou Animal Rescue Krewe (BARK) and funded by the Marian Bowers Estate, played a crucial role in the project. Over the weekend, Stark performed spay/neuter surgeries and administered rabies vaccinations to 26 feral cats in the Johnson Bayou area. This effort is part of a larger goal to humanely manage the feral cat population in the community.
Deputy Woolery highlighted the importance of the TNR project, emphasizing its role in promoting public health and reducing the number of homeless animals. The project has garnered positive feedback from the community, with many expressing their gratitude for the services provided. The team behind Sandy Paws is now calling on local residents and businesses to support the initiative through donations or volunteering to help sustain and grow the project.
Those interested in supporting the Sandy Paws TNR project are encouraged to contact Doe Woolery or Bayou Animal Rescue Krewe for more information.
