Rutherford Beach rescue

Cameron Parish Sheriff’s Report

On Monday, May 30, at approximately 1:38 p.m. the Cameron Parish Sheriff Deputies patrolling Rutherford Beach were flagged down by concerned civilians that several kids and adults looked to be in distress on Rutherford Beach just past the breakwater rocks.

Deputies quickly assessed the situation and observed several kids and adults past the breakwaters caught in a rip current. Deputies retrieved their life saving equipment and swam out to the breakwater rocks. From there, a deputy was able to throw his rescue can along with a life ring to bring the kids back to safety.

During this time, two civilians who were on the breakwater rocks also assisted the Deputy in rescuing several kids and adults. A total of 10 kids and five adults had been rescued after getting caught up in rip current.

The Sheriff Office is asking everyone visiting Rutherford Beach to not swim near the rocks since they can create dangerous rip currents.
