At approximately 11:42 p.m. on Thursday, July 6, South Cameron Fire Department was dispatched to the Martin Luther King Ferry in Cameron to report a fishing vessel on fire. While enroute SCFD was advised that the vessel had become fully involved.
Upon arrival, firefighters along with vessel owners, bystanders, and an offshore work boat began a defensive attack on the fire. Once members were able to knock down the exterior flames, firefighters began an aggressive interior attack, ventilating and extinguishing the remaining hotspots below deck in the engine room.
The cause of the fire is undetermined but is believed to be faulty wiring near the rear door of the vessel. Engines 40, 41, Ladder 42, and Rescue 75, along with 10 firefighters responded to the scene. No injuries were reported but Cameron Parish Ambulance Service District 1 also responded to the scene to offer rehab to firefighters who were part of the interior attack.
