Joyce Schexnider

Joyce Marie Broussard Schexnider died Monday, Dec. 20, 2021.

She and her husband, Alton moved to Holly Beach in 1954 to run Schexnider’s Holly Beach Grocery. In 1957, Hurricane Audrey hit Holly Beach and they evacuated to Hackberry.

She was a member of St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church in Hackberry where she belonged to the Catholic Daughter’s Court 1706.

She worked for the Cameron Parish School Board in the Hackberry school cafeteria.

In 2009, they moved to Sulphur and became members of Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church.

She is survived by her son Ronald (Jeanne) Schexnider; daughters, Glenda (Ronnie) Abshire, Cheryl (Jeff) Sanders, and Tina Dickerson; sisters Louella Sonnier and Jeanette Lacy; eight grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Edier and Lorna Landry Broussard; husband, Alton Schexnider; son, Darrell Schexnider, Sr.; grandsons, Marcus Lee and Alan Joseph Dickerson; great granddaughter, Catherine Renee Boudreaux; and eight siblings.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, Dec. 28, at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church of Sulphur. Burial followed at Hackberry Community Cemetery.
