Drowning in Johnson Bayou

On Sunday, Mar. 12, Cameron Parish Sheriff’s Office received a call at 3:35 p.m. from a camp owner in reference to a 3-year-old unattended at the end of Long Beach Rd. in Johnson Bayou.

Upon arrival, it was discovered that the child’s family was in the water. A 9-year-old boy was recovered at 4:07 p.m by a Cameron Parish deputy. He was resuscitated and taken to a Lake Charles hospital where he is listed in stable condition.

The second victim, a young girl, was found unresponsive at 4:18 p.m. by the Johnson Bayou Fire Dept. The third victim, another young girl, was found unresponsive at 4:30 p.m by a Cameron Parish deputy. The fourth victim, the mother of the children, was found at 6:49 p.m. by the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Marine Unit.

All recoveries were made on the breakwater rocks.

Assisting the Cameron Parish Sheriff’s Office with recovery efforts were Johnson Bayou Fire Dept., Cameron Parish Ambulance Dist. No. 2, U. S. Coast Guard, and Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Marine Division.
