Local leaders from Cameron and Calcasieu Parish traveled to New Orleans last week for the “We Work the Waterways” event.
“Southwest Louisiana’s waterways are busy with commerce — and high-paying maritime industry careers,” said Kim Montie, Cameron Port Director.
Montie said her goal is to bring the progam closer to home.
When students think of waterways, they may immediately think of captains, deckhands or other jobs aboard vessels. However, maritime industry also needs welders, electricians, mechanics, marine technicians, engineers and logistic professionals. They also need accountants, financial professionals, human resources specialists, information technology specialists, and administrative, safey and environmental professionals, Montie said.
Some positions are available with a high school diploma. Others require a college degree or specialized training or certifications.
The main idea is, the maritime industry provides opportunities to develop skills and advance their careers without leaving the region, Montie said.
