West Nile in Grand Lake area

Mosquito Abatement Update:

A mosquito sample from the Grand Lake area tested positive for West Nile virus. The area was sprayed by truck Saturday, July 6, which was after the sample was collected and was sprayed by plane Tuesday, July 9, if the weather permited. June, July, and August are typically the months in which mosquito control districts begin seeing positive mosquito samples across the state.

An increase in mosquito populations in Cameron Parish is expected to increase over the next week due to coastal flooding and rains. These mosquitoes will not pose an immediate disease threat since it takes around 10-14 days for the disease to replicate in the mosquito before it is contagious to humans and horses.

The citizens of Cameron Parish can protect themselves from mosquito bites by limiting time outdoors when mosquitoes are most active at dusk dawn and nighttime hours, wearing long protective clothing, using repellent when outdoors, and emptying containers ever few days that hold water.

Horse owners can protect their horses by making sure that that their horses are current on all available vaccinations and boosters.
