Time capsule to be opened

The Cameron Alliance has announced that Cameron Parish will mark the 153rd anniversary of their founding with a Sesquicentennial Celebration on Wednesday, Mar. 15, at the Cameron Multi-Purpose Building, located at 122 Recreation Center Lane in Cameron. The original event was postponed in 2020, per the Governor’s COVID declaration.

The program will be held at 3 p.m. and repeated in its entirety at 6 p.m. The historical artifacts will be on display from 3-7 p.m. and refreshments will be served. A schedule will be published later of the dates that the artifacts will be rotated through all of the Cameron Parish Public Libraries.

The time capsule was sealed on Mar. 15, 1970. It was a project by the Cameron Parish Development Association with the cooperation of the Cameron Parish Police Jury. The capsule was on display for 50 years in the foyer of the historic Cameron Parish Courthouse. It was moved from the courthouse to the Cameron Multi-Purpose Building where it was opened and artifacts were archived.

Hundreds of items were placed in the capsule, including a leather-bound scrapbook containing hand written messages from Cameron Parish residents, including many school children, to their descendants. This and other historical items will be on display. The public is encouraged to attend.
