Shirley Dee Lege Abshire was born in Gueydan and died Saturday June 15.
Shirley graduated in 1956 from Gueydan High School where she was a starter for four years on the basketball and softball teams.
Shirley and her husband Curliss owned and operated a floor covering business for four years. She later worked in the office of Our Lady of Good Counsel as a volunteer under Rev. Jace Eskind for 12 years.
She was a Catholic and parishioner at Saint Margaret’s, Our Lady of Good Counsel, and Christ the King Catholic Churches over the last 60 years.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Gregaire Lege and Nettie Humble Lege; four brothers; and infant granddaughter, Elizabeth Abshire.
Survivors are her husband, Curliss; children, Deborah Nunez (Ellis) of Grand Lake, Danny Abshire (Cindy) of Iota, Mike Abshire (Deanne) of Lake Charles, and Jill Abshire (Bryan Cameron) of Blue Point, NY; sisters, Frankie Trahan of Houston, Texas and Mi Mi Prejean of China, Texas; six grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral was held at Johnson Funeral Home on Wednesday, June 19, until the start of a celebration of life service at 2 p.m. The Very Rev Anthony Fontenot officiated. Burial followed at Consolata Cemetery.
