On Wednesday, July 15, the Cameron Parish Mosquito Control Board voted to reduce its parish wide millage from 10 mills to 5.97 mills due to increased taxable value of property in the parish. This will help ease the tax burden on individuals and businesses across the parish. The district currently collects $3,241,049. Next year the district will collect around $400,000 less.
Based off of the mosquito populations and total expenditures from the last five years, the director feels like the district will be able to collect a lower amount of revenue, yet still maintain the same standards of parish wide service.
The district has an adequate surplus to handle any unforeseen expenses such as replacing the airplane or emergency spraying due to a natural disaster or mosquito borne disease outbreak.
