Matilda Labove

Matilda Labove, 86, passed away on Monday, Mar. 18, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. She was born Sept. 29, 1937 in Creole, to Frank Labove and Cora Bell (Howard) Labove. Matilda was a lifelong area resident of Cameron Parish, where she loved gardening and raising all kinds of livestock and she was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Always keeping busy, she worked at Trosclair Canning Factory, Cameron Parish Sheriffs’ Office, Cameron Parish School Board, and O’Donnell Funeral Home and then Hixson Funeral Homes, where she still currently assisted the staff on funerals.

As the last surviving member of a family of 13 children, Matilda was preceded in death by her parents; six sisters, Irene Picou, Lorena Richard, Ida Davis, Annie Labove, Carrie Labove and Ellen Labove; and six brothers, Charlie Labove, John Clement, Oliver Labove, Emile Labove, Clarence Labove and Jimmy Labove.

Survivors include her daughters, Penny Labove and Matilda Bertrand and her husband Melvin; her granddaughter, Kayla Semien and her husband Michael; three great grandchildren, Harlie Richard, Austin Richard and Quincy Semien; her best friend, Charles Minyard, her caretakers, who she thought of as her own family, Julie and Doris; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation was held for friends and family from 4 until 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Mar. 20, at the Hixson Funeral Home, 3001 Ryan Street in Lake Charles, where the rosary was prayed at 6:30 p.m. Funeral services began at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Mar. 21 at Hixson Funeral Home, and concluded with interment in Sweetlake – Grand Lake Community Cemetery.
