Looking back I remember how excited we were at our house when Thursdays came. We ran for the mailbox when getting off the bus.

We wanted to read the Cameron Pilot and sometimes we were in it as 4-H members or football players. The rule was the children could read the paper and then release it to dad when he came home from work. Yes, we got ink on our hands and yes there were parts of the paper we just had no use for, the legals for one. But it was an adventure and we got to read about things in our parish that we did not know. We saved our papers, we needed them for record books and references.

Fast forward to today. . . yes we have Facebook and the internet but the excitement just isn’t there. We learn about things as they happen and take it for granted. It is not the same as holding the newspaper in your hand and having the ability to save it for further use. Have you ever seen something on Facebook and tried to go back to it later! Not working!

The children today do not know what it is like to have their photo in a newspaper that circulates around the parish and outside the parish. It helps us save memories, it helps us understand issues, it gives the general public information on meetings they could not attend.

Let’s face it the Cameron Pilot (50 cents) per paper is not an old fashion item that is not going to be around long! It is here to stay and is worth buying a subscription to! Who knows when you might have your picture in the newspaper! Show the kids how to preserve their memories and be proud of their parish!
