Groundbreaking ceremony held for Hackberry High

By Cyndi Sellers

A little over of a year has passed since this was reported:

Hackberry will be getting a new school, thanks to passage of an $18 million, 20 year bond issue in School District 15. The measure was approved by a comfortable 53 percent to 47 percent margin, 245-218. Voter turnout in Hackberry was 50.9 percent.

Property owners will pay a 9.43 mill tax from 2021-2029, when the millage is expected to drop to 1.57 mills for the remainder of the debt.

A Groundbreaking Ceremony for the new Hackberry High School was held on Monday, Nov. 16, on the site of the current Rodeo Arena. Cameron Parish School Board Superintendent Charley Lemons, other School Board members and parish dignitaries were on hand to give support for a much awaited day.

The completion date has been estimated for early 2022.
