Fraudsters stole nearly $65,000 from Cameron Parish Recreation District #6, a report from the Louisiana Legislative Auditor’s Office shows.

In October 2023, three fraudulent checks totaling $64,739.44 were cashed from the district’s bank account, according to the 2023 audit. The district notified the Legislative Auditor and the District Attorney of the fraud, and steps were initiated to recover the funds from the bank.

Cameron Sheriff Chris Savoie said his office received a complaint on Aug, 24, 2024, about the fraud. He said someone out of state printed a fake check and cashed it in New York.

According to the district’s report, the checks were accepted by the bank despite there only being one signature on the checks. District policy requires two signatures to cash a check.

Savoie said his office turned the case over to the FBI.

Amanda Chaumont, Director of Cameron Parish Recreation District #6, said the district has no comment regarding the fraudulent checks.
