Fishing Festival kicks off with Captains’ Night

The 17th Annual Cameron Fishing Festival is set for Friday and Saturday, Aug. 6-7. The event sponsored by the Cameron Lions Club and Venture Global LNG will again be held at the Grand Chenier Park on the Mermentau River in Grand Chenier.

Captains Night will kick off the tournament on Thursday, July 29, from 6-8 p.m. at the Grand Chenier Park Pavilion. Anglers may purchase discounted fishing tickets while enjoying a complimentary fried fish dinner with all the trimmings, music by Cody Forrest, and great door prizes.

Fishing begins at 12:01 Friday, Aug. 6, in the offshore and bay divisions. The weigh station opens at 3 p.m. for all divisions.

Onshore activities will include lots of food and live music, provided by the The Teardrops, featuring Terry Beard and Kaleb Trahan on Friday and the Beau Young Band, The Watersedge Band, and Steelshot on Saturday.

For the children, there will be a free waterslide, games and fun.

Gates open at 5 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. Saturday. The Festival closes at 10 p.m. each night. The weigh station closes at 7 p.m. Friday and 5 p.m. Saturday, with fishing awards announced at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Gate fees are $7 Friday, $10 Saturday, or $15 for a two-day pass. Children 12 and under get in free.

Proceeds from the Festival help fund the Cameron Lions Club’s scholarship, eye care, and other charitable programs.
