The Cameron Ferry will be removed from service this weekend for maintenance that is expected to take around six months to complete.

Starting at midnight on Saturday, Aug. 31, the Cameron Ferry will be removed from service in preparation for its federally mandated dry dock, according to the Department of Transportation and Development.

In the meantime, DOTD has arranged for a relief ferry to continue limited service across the ship channel.

While the relief ferry is in service, any vehicle combinations longer than 50 feet will be required to detour and may use I-10.

Additionally, the boat launch on the west side of the Calcasieu River, adjacent to the ferry landing, will be closed to ensure safety while the relief ferry is in service.

The Cameron Ferry is expected to be in dry dock for approximately six months after work begins, according to DOTD. During the scheduled downtime, the Cameron Ferry will undergo its mid-cycle hull exam, internal structural exam and rehab and repairs to major mechanical systems.

DOTD is asking for the public’s patience and reminds drivers to use caution and also be on the lookout for work crews and their equipment.
