MINUTES
The Cameron Parish Beachfront Development District #1 Commission met in regular session on Monday, April 8, 2024, at the Johnson Bayou Community Center. The meeting was called to order at 6:00 p.m. by Chairman Michele Long, who led the pledge and prayer.
COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Chairman Michele Long, Vice Chairman Russell Badon, Nikki Norman, Tammy Erbelding, Chad Cooper, and Secretary Cindy Snead.
ABSENT: None
GUESTS: Cameron Parish Police Juror Sonny McGee, and Nicole Kieda, Audubon Institute, Audubon Aquarium Rescue (AAR)
APPROVAL OF MINUTES: On the motion of Russell Badon, seconded by Chad Cooper, and carried, the minutes for the March 11, 2024 meeting were approved as presented.
PUBLIC COMMENT: None
FINANCIAL REPORT: On the motion of Tammy Erbelding, seconded by Nikki Norman, and carried, the board approved the March 2024 Financial Report as presented.
OLD BUSINESS:
Holly Beach Subcommittee: Cody Norman reported that there are intentions to hold a community meeting in late April to accommodate more property owners. Additionally, he mentioned ongoing discussions regarding the installation of a 30-foot flagpole at the entrance sign of Holly Beach. The subcommittee is currently compiling a list of required supplies along with their associated costs, which will be presented during the board meeting in May. Craig Broussard will be responsible for presenting the proposal during that meeting.
Sonny McGee provided an update to the board regarding the status of the Holly Beach Pavilion and Pier Project. The parish is awaiting a determination on LMI (Low to Moderate Income) from a pending grant application before proceeding further. Furthermore, Mr. McGee mentioned that the golf cart ordinance will be up for consideration on the agenda of the April 10, 2024 meeting and encouraged all interested parties to attend the police jury meeting.
Subdivision Welcome Signs: Signs have been collected. Locations for sites have been identified, and GPS coordinates have been forwarded to the Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) for inspection of underground utilities and pipelines. Property owners of prospective sites will be contacted to obtain approval.
Love the Boot Beach Cleanup, April 20, 2024: Cheniere, Cameron LNG, Commonwealth, Fur Festival, and Venture Global have provided financial sponsorships. Furthermore, Williams, Venture Global, and the Cameron Parish Tourist Commission have contributed promotional items as donations “In Kind.” Eric Roux from Waste Haul in Lake Charles is generously offering a roll-off dumpster for Mae’s Beach. Johnson Bayou First Responders Fire/EMS will host a Touch-A-Truck event in the rear parking lot from 12:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
NEW BUSINESS
Nicole Kieda, representing the Audubon Aquarium Rescue (AAR) delivered a report on the recent March 2, 2024 workshop of the Mammal and Sea Turtle Stranding Network, hosted at the Johnson Bayou Community Center. The aim was to bolster response efforts for stranded animals, successfully enlisting 20 individuals for assistance. The Audubon Institute is actively gathering data on both living and deceased animals while also maintaining a watchful eye on overall marine animal health. This year, there have been 26 instances of strandings reported in Louisiana, with 24 of them occurring specifically within Cameron Parish. Field operatives are stationed in Holly Beach until May 31st, conducting surveys five days a week.
On the motion of Nikki Norman, seconded by Russell Badon, and carried, the board selected Cindy Snead as the new board member, B.J. Miller as a board nominee designate, and Chad Cooper as an honorary board member.
On the motion of Russell Badon, seconded by Nicki Norman, and carried, the board selected Michele Long as the board chairman.
On the motion of Nikki Norman, seconded by Chad Cooper, and carried, the board selected Russell Badon as the board vice-chairman.
On the motion of Russell Badon, seconded by Nicki Norman, and carried, the board selected Cindy Snead as the board member/secretary.
ANNOUNCEMENTS: The upcoming community meeting for The Breakwater Project is scheduled for May 13, 2024, starting at 6:00 p.m. at the Johnson Bayou Community Center. All interested parties are encouraged to attend, including but not limited to property owners in Little Florida, Gulf Breeze, and Constance subdivisions.
PAY BILLS:
On the motion of Nikki Norman, seconded by Russell Badon, and carried, the board approved recurring charges to the Cameron Pilot for the agenda and minutes placement in legals.
ADJOURN:
There being no further business, on the motion of Chad Cooper, seconded by Nikki Norman, and carried, the meeting was adjourned at 7:25 p.m.
The next meeting will be May 13, 2024, 6:00 p.m. at the Johnson Bayou Community Center.
