May 2025 Sulphur High School graduate and Louisiana State University Freshman Sydney Waters has been busy in Baton Rouge. In addition to studying Human Resources at LSU. Waters is working as a page during the current legislative session.
Melinda Frith, legislative assistant to State Representative Ryan Bourriaque, explained the job as handling paperwork such as drafts, bills and other communication between legislators and bill drafters or from one senate or house member to another.
“Sometimes committee staff need certain documents read or approved. Pages handle that. They are the only ones allowed on the chamber floor besides Legislators during session,” she said.
Frith described it as a great opportunity for a college student because the staff works around the class schedule. Some pages even decide to go forward with political careers.
“Serving as a page for the House of Representatives at the Louisiana State Capitol is an incredibly joyful and rewarding experience,” Waters said. “I truly loved meeting new people while having the privilege of working alongside and supporting our state officials.”
She expressed her gratitude to State Rep. Ryan Bourriaque for trusting her with the “amazing opportunity” and for his “unwavering support and encouragement.”
