MINUTES
The Cameron Parish Beachfront Development District #1 Commission convened for its regular session on Monday, August 11, 2025, at the Johnson Bayou Community Center. The meeting was called to order at 5:00 p.m. by Chairman Michele Long, who led the Pledge of Allegiance and a prayer.
COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Chairman Michele Long; Commissioner/Secretary Cindy Snead, Commissioner B.J. Miller; Commissioner Designate Debbie Fontenot
ABSENT: Vice Chairman Russell Badon, Commissioner Tammy Erbelding
GUESTS: None
APPROVAL OF MINUTES: A motion to approve the minutes of the July 14, 2025 meeting as presented was made by B.J. Miller, seconded by Cindy Snead, and unanimously carried by the board.
PUBLIC COMMENT: None
FINANCIAL REPORT: A motion to approve the July 2025 financial reports for both the Beachfront Development District #1 and the Marshland-Cameron Parish Beach Sweep as presented was made by B.J. Miller, seconded by Cindy Snead, and unanimously carried by the board.
OLD BUSINESS:
Ratify Recurring Charges: A motion to approve the recurring charges for the Cameron Pilot and Superior Storage was made by B.J. Miller, seconded by Cindy Snead, and unanimously carried by the board.
Holly Beach Update: Debbie Fontenot provided an update on the beach trash situation, mentioning that she will work to identify a potential dumpster location with community support. She has also reached out to the Sheriff’s Department to request their assistance in cleaning up debris left by tourists on the beach. Drainage continues to be a problem on both the center and west ends of Holly Beach, as the board awaits solutions from the drainage board, parish, and roads & bridges departments. The board is also waiting on Cameron Parish Roads and Bridges to address the beach access points, which are currently low and holding water. Additional information will be collected and shared at the next board meeting.
Rip Current Flags: B.J. Miller finished installing the new red rip current warning flags along the west beaches. He then moved to close out the rip current flags project, with Cindy Snead seconding the motion, and the board unanimously approving it.
Rescue Tubes & Signage: Emergency signage has been received, and safety rescue tubes have been ordered for placement at strategic locations on the beaches for use in emergencies.
The Holly Beach–Creole Nature Trail Restroom: The refurbished Sabine Wildlife Refuge restroom and the planned Creole Nature Trail Holly Beach restroom will be included in a CEA to secure a maintenance contract for three days a week. Quotes are currently being gathered and shared with the appropriate agencies.
NEW BUSINESS:
Cameron Parish Beach Sweep: A number of industrial companies will carry out their volunteer beach cleanup along Hwy 82 on September 18, 2025, with the regular beach sweep events scheduled for September 20, 2025.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Breakwater Project: According to discussions with Fenstermaker Engineering, the Little Florida breakwater project is expected to begin by the end of the summer and will extend west to Long Beach and east to Constance Beach.
Ethics Training and Prevention of Sexual Harassment Training are due by December 31, 2025.
