MINUTES
The Cameron Parish Beachfront Development District #1 Commission met in regular session on Monday, June 12, 2023, at the Johnson Bayou Community Center. The meeting was called to order at 6:00 p.m. by Chairman Michele Long, who led the pledge and prayer.
Commissioners present were Chairman Michele Long, Vice Chairman Russell Badon, Nikki Norman, Chad Cooper, and Secretary Cindy Snead. Guest present was Desiree Derouen from Cheniere Energy.
On the motion of Russell Badon, seconded by Nikki Norman, and carried, the minutes for the May 5, 2023 meeting were approved as presented.
Old Business:
Cody Norman reported on the Holly Beach sub-committee. There will be a Holly Beach Subcommittee meeting for residents Saturday, June 17th at 11:00 a.m. to discuss project ideas for a previous donation. They will also discuss the addition of four-way stop signs, the July 4th plans, and trash and dumpster needs for scheduled events. The board agrees that Holly Beach event coordinators should be responsible for dumpster needs for their events/festivals.
Craig Broussard gave an update on leasing state land in Zone 2. Work continues to obtain surveys and legal descriptions for the lease. Michele Long will reach out to the parish for update.
Usage possibilities for the 2731 Gulf Beach Hwy. donated land were discussed. One idea was to create a parking lot for beach access to a pavilion on future leased lands.
Michele Long reported on the Scenic Byways Grant for Public Restroom at Holly Beach. Contact has been made with Allie Mulligan, Sabine Wildlife Refuge, who expressed interest in joining into a custodial contract with the beach board for their restroom facility on Hwy 27 along with the future Holly Beach restroom. Chad Cooper will research maintenance companies and provide a report at the next meeting.
The parish ordered five more new rip tide warning signs to be installed in Districts #1, and the board ordered 20 “Warning Rip Current” flags to be placed on the new rip current signs.
DOTD will be asked to place ? mile markers from Mae’s Beach east to the Ferry Landing so that tourists may provide more accurate location information to 911 dispatchers. Johnson Bayou EMS and Fire Department have asked for corresponding highway mile markers to be posted at all beach entrances as well as reestablishing reflective subdivision signs on Hwy 82 so that emergency personnel can be quickly directed to areas of concern.
The board further discussed several options for the damaged Creole Nature Trail Billboard near the Texas/Louisiana state line. Michele Long will contact the parish and Creole Nature Trail for an update.
New Business:
Craig Broussard presented the May financial spreadsheet and its expenditures, donations, and account information. On the motion of Russell Badon, seconded by Nikki Norman, and carried, the board approved the May financial report.
Open Session:
The International Coastal Cleanup Day will be Saturday, September 16, 2023. The Johnson Bayou Recreation Center and the Beachfront Development Board will partner again to make this another successful event for the community.
The Johnson Bayou Fire Department has purchased new life vests that will be more efficient in water rescues in order to save lives on our coastal beaches.
Pay Bills:
On the motion of Russell Badon, seconded by Chad Cooper, and carried, the board will pay Marine Rescue Products $848.50 for 20 rip current warning flags.

There being no further business, on the motion of Chad Cooper, seconded by Russell Badon, and carried, the meeting was adjourned at 7:16 p.m.
The next meeting will be July 10, 2023, at the Johnson Bayou Community Center.
