Cameron Parish Beach Development District #2 hosted the 40th International Beach Sweep on Rutherford and Broussard Beaches.
Some 92 volunteers collected 121 bags of trash along with other large items that were not baggable. Volunteers were issued gift bags containing a beach towel with Cameron Parish Beach Sweep logo, sea towel, sunglasses and sunscreen with lip balm. Gift bags were donated by the Cameron Parish Tourism Commission. Hand held fans from Jeffra Wise DeViney at the Cameron Pilot.
Groups participating were:
Grand Lake High School FFA, Fenstermaker, Linde, Venture Global, South Cameron High School, McNeese State University, Bell City High School and Beta Club, Starbucks, K & M Project Services, South Cameron Fire Department.
Assisting board members were:
Sandi Silmon, Deputy Anthony Swire – Cameron Parish Sheriff’s Dept. donated the use of their large tent, Timmy and Missy Dupont – South Cameron Fire Dept., George Benoit, Chucky Primeaux, Chad Little, Sarah Roy, Richard Rogers, Cindy Mayo, Jared Landry and Valerie Duhon.
Items were then checked and counted for the scavenger hunt. First place was Lillian Landry, Second place was Becky Trahan and Third place was Fenstermaker. All three placing were given gift cards.
The most unusual thing found at the beach was voted on by applause. Vivian Landry received gift card for bringing in the top portion of a pelican’s beak.
Volunteers gathered back at the registration area to enjoy chili dogs or sausage on a bun with chips and cold drinks. Some even made Frito pies.
A special thanks to Billy Nungesser, La. Lieutenant Governor for donating the Walmart and food gift cards.
