Hornets defense shines in scrimmage

By Jake McCoy

Last Thursday the Grand Lake Hornets traveled to Kinder to participate in a three team scrimmage as they took on not only the Kinder Yellowjackets but also the Class 4A Beau Chene Gators from the Lafayette area and boy did those Hornets look good!

Although Grand Lake did not find the zone against either team, they still moved the ball exceptionally well. But it was their defense that really stood out. People have been talking all week long as the Hornets stuffed Kinder and Beau Chene how many plays throughout the scrimmage. This led to the two opponents getting very frustrated and which of course led a little bit of chippiness and trash talk in between the whistles. However, the Hornets stay focused, trying different things on defense as they continued to make adjustments in preparation for their big week one matchup at DeQuincy.

Head Coach Jeff Wainwright and his staff appeared to be pleased with their squad’s performance. Although there still is a lot of work to be done with it being the pre-season some could argue that the Hornets’ defense looked to be in mid-season form. But there’s still have one more pre-season test to go before the start of the regular season and that will be tomorrow Thursday Aug. 27 as they Hornets will travel to Welsh to take on the Crowley Gents at 5:30 p.m. in jamboree action.
