Curliss Abshire

Curliss John Abshire, 90, died Sunday, July 26, 2026. He was born in Gueydan.

Curliss graduated from Gueydan High School in 1954, where he played football, basketball and baseball throughout his for years of high school. A fun fact was that the first language he learned to speak was Cajun French. He went on to own and operate Abshire’s Floor Covering before beginning a 25-year career with PPG, where he retired as an operator. He was a longtime member of Christ the King Catholic Church.

Survivors include his children, Deborah “Debbie” Nunez (Ellis) of Grand Lake, Danny Ray Abshire (Cindy) of Iota, Mike Abshire (Deanne) of Lake Charles, and Jill Abshire (Bryan Cameron) of Blue Point, NY; six grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; “adopted” son, Randy Fruge (Michelle).

He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Dee Abshire; parents, Eledier Pierre Abshire and Auraline I. Hebert Abshire; two siblings; and his infant granddaughter, Elizabeth Abshire.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, July 30, at St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church, with Monsignor Jace Eskind officiating. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. on Thursday at Johnson Funeral Home and continue until 1:30 p.m. A rosary will be recited at 1 p.m. Interment will follow at Consolata Cemetery.
