The return of the Family Fishing Festival was an incredible success

The return of Cameron Prairie National Wildlife Refuge’s Family Fishing Festival held Saturday, May 9, was an incredible success.

This event would not have been possible without the support of our amazing community partners, volunteers, sponsors, and staff.

The following helped with the event:

Cameron Parish Ambulance provided ambulances and staff onsite to help keep everyone safe throughout the festival.

Kona Ice served delicious snow cones on a muggy day.

LDWF brought their mobile aquarium, provided loaner fishing gear, and wonderful VIP volunteers.

Cameron Parish Tourism members manned the visitor center and handed out materials and frisbees, that were a huge hit with the kids.

The Southwest Louisiana Master Naturalists volunteered across so many booths and activities.

The Audubon Aquarium Rescue Team taught visitors about marine strandings and what to do if they encounter tangled wildlife.

The Louisiana Cattlemen’s Association cooked and served 100% beef hotdogs, chips, and drinks for attendees.

The Cameron Parish Sheriff’s Office helped set up tents so families had a shaded place to sit and eat together.

The Contraband Flycatchers taught visitors about fly fishing, knot tying, and lead a casting activity for participants to enjoy.

Venture Global provided boxes of worms for the entire festival, portable restrooms, trash cans, bottled water for attendees, and staff who remained onsite throughout the event to help maintain these amenities.

By joining together all helped in making this community event possible and helped raise awareness for supporting outdoor recreation, conservation, and family fun in Southwest Louisiana.

We hope everyone had an absolute blast at the return of Cameron Prairie NWR’s Family Fishing Festival!

It was wonderful seeing so many families, kids, and anglers out enjoying time together outdoors and making memories on the refuge. We hope everyone enjoyed the weekend.

There were 162 visitors (not counting staff, volunteers, and partners) and guests left with a total of: 98 Bass, 70 Brim, 64 Catfish, of which only one was a giant flathead, the rest where a mix of both channel and blue cats.
