Iola Smith

Iola Marie Smith, 93, of Port Acres, Texas passed away on Thursday, Dec. 20, 2018 at her daughter’s home in Lake Charles. Iola was born May 31, 1925 in Little Chenier to the late Onezime Trahan and Margaret Benoit Trahan. She retired from the Port Arthur ISD in food service and was a member of St. Therese, the Little Flower of Jesus Catholic Church in Port Acres.

Iola is survived by her children, Shirline A. Broussard of Orange, Texas, Charles D. Smith of Beaumont, Texas, Phyllis M. Nash of Lake Charles, Hadrian Smith of Port Acres, Texas and Stacie A. Taylor of Kennadale, Texas; her sister, Betty LaBove of Little Chenier; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jesse William Smith; her sisters, Winnie Fontenot, Lorena Hebert, and Bernice Savoie; her brother, Wilson Trahan; her son-in-law Hardy Broussard (Shirline); and daughter-in-law, Wendy Lynn Smith (Charles).

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, Dec. 24, at Little Flower Catholic Church at 10 a.m. with Rev. Rejimon E. George celebrant. Interment followed at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Groves under the direction of Melancon’s Funeral Home in Nederland, Texas.

A gathering of the family and friends was held from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday evening with a Rosary being recited at 6 p.m. at the funeral home.

Harry Gaspard

Harry James Gaspard, born in Gueydan, died Friday, Dec. 21, 2018, at the age of 65.

Harry lived in Holmwood all of his life and retired from JevCon. He was a past member of the Cajun French Music Association.

He is survived by his wife, Darlene (Creppel) Gaspard; daughters, Monica Duplechin (Annette) of Sulphur, Crystal Harrington (Scott) of Holmwood, Lacey Lawson of Bell City, and Brandy Kelley of Lake Charles; son, Steven Gaspard (Brittany) of Holmwood; siblings; Lucinda Monceaux, Jo Ann Gaspard, Karen Hay, Beverly Lougon, Terry Gaspard; and 10 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph “Jeff ” and Mary Grace (Dugas) Gaspard.

A Mass of Christian burial was held Monday, Dec. 24, in St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Bell City. Father John Payne officiated. Burial followed in Thornwell Cemetery.
